The following recipe is for a delicious, refreshing drink which will provide your body with protein, essential fatty acids, low-glycemic carbohydrates, minerals, and other vital nutrients. Add the following to your blender:
Optional ingredients
Blend until smooth. Add water if needed to thin the mix. If you include blackberries or raspberries in the mix, you might want to add a touch more of honey to offset the tart taste of the berries. You can adjust both the ingredients and the quantities to satisfy your taste. Hint: Vanilla protein powder is great with frozen peaches (i.e. peaches and cream). Chocolate protein powder goes well with strawberries (i.e. as in chocolate covered strawberries). The above blend will yield two large glasses of the protein drink. Consume all of it, preferably as your breakfast meal. It will keep even a large man’s appetite satisfied for up to four hours. Discussion of IngredientsMilk: Whole milk is low on the Glycemic Index (as low as low-fat milk), meaning it does not add to weight gain. And forget about all of the horror stories you have heard about saturated fat in milk. New research is showing that saturated fat is NOT the culprit it was once thought to be. Bananas: The nutrient level of bananas is at its highest when the banana peel is uniformly yellow. Try to avoid bananas that are too green or too ripe. Avoid bananas that have bruises since these bruises contain molds which can wreck your immune health. Strawberries: Fresh strawberries are recommended over frozen ones because of pesticides. Apparently, frozen strawberries are not washed prior to freezing since the rinse water would leave an ice crust on the frozen strawberries. Buy fresh strawberries and soak them well in clean water to remove as much pesticide as possible. Strawberries are high in sulfur which is a building block for collagen. Collagen is the glue that holds together the molecules in your skin, blood vessels, etc. Thus, strawberries are great for your complexion. Frozen berries: Berries are a rich source of antioxidants. They are high in phyto-chemicals, vitamin C, and fiber. Blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and raspberries are in the top six fruit antioxidant foods. Frozen berries do not spoil rapidly as do fresh berries. Flaxseed Oil / Olive Oil / Coconut Oil / Fish Oil: These oils are rich in the essential fatty acids which are important to health. Flaxseed oil (organic, cold-pressed only, please) is high in Omega 3 fatty acids (particularly ALA). Fish oil also is high in Omega 3’s (particularly EPA and DHA). Olive oil (extra virgin only!) is rich in Omega 9 fatty acids and Coconut oil (extra virgin, non-copra!) is high in lauric acid. Avoid soy, corn, canola, safflower, sunflower, and cottonseed oils. (Also avoid margarine in your diet; use butter instead… YES, BUTTER!!!) Nuts/Seeds: Raw, uncooked, unsalted nuts are a rich source of natural vitamin E, magnesium, potassium, and arginine. Other nuts to consider in the protein drink are hazelnuts, macadamias, and Brazil nuts. Nuts are rich in Omega-6 fatty acids which, though beneficial, are already too high in the typical American diet. Flaxseed/fish oils contain Omega 3 fatty acids which will balance the Omega-6 in the nuts. You can add RAW flax seeds to your drink (about 1/4 cup) to take advantage of the whole seed. Blend extra well to make certain that the seeds are broken open to release the oil. If the seeds don’t break open, then you must first grind them. Protein Powder: You should only use whey protein powder because it is derived from an animal source (i.e. milk). Protein powders made from non-animal sources, such as soy, do not contain all of the amino acids required by your body. The very best protein powder is called Goatein™, made from goat’s milk. Look for it in your health food store. If you cannot drink milk products, then you can substitute water for milk and soy protein for milk protein. Whole Egg: The raw egg is one of the most complete foods on Earth, yet it is routinely trashed by so-called food experts as follows: High cholesterol – Scientists now realize that dietary cholesterol does not necessarily lead to high body cholesterol. Salmonella poisoning – Salmonella, if present, apparently occur on the egg SHELL and not in the egg contents. You can easily kill salmonella by disinfecting the egg shell. You probably are as likely to contract e. coli poisoning from packaged lettuce as you are salmonella from eggs. The answer in both cases is to wash and disinfect. Egg yolks are not good for you – Nonsense! Egg yolks are one of Nature’s best sources of sulfur which your body needs for great hair and skin. Buy only free-range eggs (from hens that eat worms and bugs) or eggs that are called OMEGA-3 EGGS (available at some grocery stores). Wash and rinse the eggs thoroughly before refrigerating. Or, you can cover them in a bowl of water and add a few drops of bleach (or a food disinfectant from your health food store) to kill salmonella. Rinse and then place in the fridge. Never put the egg carton into your fridge, lest it contain salmonella. You will not be able to taste the raw egg in your protein drink. Note: When you cook an egg, the heat destroys many of its nutrients. Also, the action of the blender can destroy the cellular structure in the egg contents. Add the egg after all of the other ingredients have been blended, and then blend again for a second or two. Other Ingredients to considerYou can turn your protein drink into a real health drink by adding still more ingredients, as follows: Cinnamon (from the spice aisle at your supermarket) – Yes, cinnamon will flavor the taste of your protein drink, but this is not why it is added. Cinnamon contains type-A polymers which help make insulin receptor sites more sensitive to insulin, thus aiding the maintenance of blood sugar. It also helps control inflammation in the body thus relieving various symptoms such as joint pain. Use only one teaspoon since cinnamon contains other ingredients that are said to be harmful in high doses. Turmeric (from the spice aisle at your supermarket) – Turmeric is rich in natural antioxidant curcuminoids that strengthen the liver and protect the gastrointestinal tract. It is used to treat arthritis, boils, chronic pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, heel pain, and inflammatory bowel disease. Unlike cinnamon, it does not have a good taste, so sprinkle as much of it as you can into your drink without spoiling the taste. Colloidal Silver - For those of you who use colloidal silver for its anti-microbial benefits, you can add it directly to your protein drink. Powdered Vitamins – Add the powder directly to your drink. Be careful not to add so much that the taste is adversely affected. Liquid Vitamins/Minerals – Add these directly to your drink as desired. This drink is not designed to treat or cure any disease, nor has it been approved by the FDA, so please check with your doctor before consuming these natural foods! |
